381. Discourteous
Sound No 381
About this sound
Words have a fascination for me and Discourteous is a word that has an old feel to it, it’s not a word that is often used in general conversation and yet it says such a lot in the one word. Coming into vogue if we will around the 1800’s , becoming more commonly used between the 1900’s to the 1950 and then dropping off again until a slight rise in popularity around 2010.
So what does the word Discourteous mean?
The Dictionary gives us many options and again the words it relates are often ‘older’ or less used words
Rude, impolite, ill-mannered, disrespectful, uncivil, unmannerly, unchivalrous, ungallant, ungentlemanly, unladylike, ill-bred, churlish, boorish, crass, ungracious, graceless, uncouth, insolent, impudent, cheeky, audacious and presumptuous
As well as curt, brusque, offhand, unceremonious, short, sharp, uncomplimentary, offensive, insulting, derogatory, disparaging.
More recent words with the same connotations can include backchat, bold, impolite, lippy, sassy, smart mouth, crude, vulgar, coarse and more
The Dictionary tells us that the word Discourteous is an adjective and we can be aware of the ramifications of such a behavior if we will and the fact that a ‘Discourteous behavior’ may activate a combination of a mental and physical processes and cell memory that has ‘trigger’s or reactions within the body and that these may relate to genetic ancestral memory and programming.

How this sound came about
Again as Susan and brainstormed and conferred over the years I was aware of my own levels of impatience, the ‘I want to know now not tomorrow and preferably last week or even the week before’ that I had attributed to my life and my ‘need to know things’ as well as the ‘doctrines and behaviors’ that had formed a large part of my own early life.
Growing up in the 1950’s and beyond languaging and behaviours were much more strict than in many of the later years and being Discourteous or Disrespectful sound no 383 was severely frowned upon
As Susan and I have worked with Sounds from Source for so many years they are well aware of my idiosyncrasies and I am sure that there have been many times when I have frustrated them with my own programming and belief systems and people being Discourteous or Disrespectful and two of my personal bugbears
So, when Susan and I talked about the levels of Discourtesy and Disrespect we decided to create sounds based around these issues.

Comment from Susan – Pretty much the same can be said about this sound as for the term ‘Disrespect’. What is discourteous for one, may not be for another. Discounting of course, the usual social protocols within the ‘correct environment’. And this of course can change dramatically if a word, gesture, protocol or whatever is interjected into a different environment. Tolerance can sometimes be required. This sound is more to help you cope with what you consider discourteous and also to clear any preconceived patterns – to enhance better communication and understanding.
