218. Dependence
Sound Number 218
Description of sound
The Dependence sound was one which as many of the Sounds from Source sounds do appeared because it was required.
The Dependence sounds work with discreating your own levels of dependence on another or others or on a situation or circumstance and of activating your own levels of independence.
Sound Length 1.42 minutes
How this sound came about
Often the areas that the specific sounds address are presented to us as we have grown and developed. In this instance they were to address the levels of dependence or reliance that had shown up in Susan’s and my lives in a variety of ways.
Dependence or dependant behaviours could also be described as some one exhibiting issues of neediness, helplessness, defencelessness, vulnerability, a need for support or some one to cling to for example.
While we may be willing to be that ‘support person’ for a period of time it is often unhealthy for the other person or even detrimental to ourselves to allow the situation to continue indefinitely.
Gently withdrawing such support or attempting to assist the other person to be more self sufficient or independent can often lead to accusations of not caring, of not being supportive and at times acrimonious or over reactive behaviours and displays of grieving and loss.
As Susan has said in the past All of the sounds have come about from our own needs as we go along, or from viewing what clients and friends require and then discussing such with each other and Sounds From Source themselves. I never tire of this ‘work’ – connecting and working with Sounds From Source is as thrilling for me today as it was when we were first contacted back in 2004.

Comment by Susan – when I think of ‘dependence’, it not only brings up others dependence on us, or our dependence on others, but also dependence on the familiar. How many times have I tried to break a habit or inject a bit of ‘spontaneity’ into seemingly mundane events only to find that I scurry back to the familiar not for safety reasons but generally due to laziness in finding a newer, fresher, different path. While I am not suggesting cutting all ties and familiar events, happenings and things. Often when it is time to move on, we are prevented by our seeming dependence on what is already here, even when it is uncomfortable or just past it’s time. I find this sound invaluable for helping to ‘set a new scene’ and make adjustments for ongoing growth and learning. With the great volume of information and responsibilities that are brought on by the ever increasing necessities of handling a body of work like Sounds From Source. I find I need to constantly readjust myself and conditions, learnings and so on to remain effective and current. This sound helps with this. I highly recommend it.
